Nancy Steele D.Env., President
Dr. Nancy Steele is the Executive Director of the Los Angeles & San Gabriel Rivers Watershed Council, a center for watershed research and analysis. In her career she has held a variety of positions in California state government focusing on environmental protection of land, air, and water. Nancy is a member of the Marine Conservation Research Institute of the Aquarium of the Pacific and she served on the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Advisory Committee as an appointee of the Board of Supervisors from February 2001 to March 2002. In 2010 she was received the Women in Business award from Senator Carol Liu and Assemblymember Anthony Portantino in the Environment / Energy Efficiency category.
Lori Paul, RVT, Vice President
Lori is a California Registered Veterinary Technician with extensive experience in wildlife care and management. She has been an RVT and zoo keeper at the Los Angeles Zoo. Lori has held a variety of engineering, education and public outreach positions for the space program. She is an active member of the Altadena Crest Trail Restoration Working Group (ACTRWG). She has a special interest in reptiles, chaparral and California desert ecosystems.
Michelle Markman, Secretary & Treasurer
Michelle Markman is a California native and a resident of Altadena for the past ten years. She is the Director of Sales & Marketing for Energy Efficiency Solar, a solar installation company. In her last life, Michelle was a multi-cultural marketing expert who created custom publications for corporations.
Mary Barrie
Mary E. Barrie is a retired law librarian and a long-time community activist with an emphasis on trails and open space issues. She currently serves as a La Canada Flintridge Parks & Recreation Commissioner and as a member of the La Canada Flintridge General Plan Advisory Committee. In addition, she is an active member of the La Canada Flintridge Trails Council Board and the Altadena Crest Trail Restoration Working Group (ACTRWG).
Laura Garrett
Born in Pasadena, Laura Garrett has been an environmentalist all of her life. She currently serves on the City of Pasadena’s Open Space and Conservation Advisory Committee; also, she is Conservation Chair for the Pasadena Audubon Society, serving on their Board since 2002. Laura teaches Rhetoric and Composition at Cal State L.A.
Lawren Markle
Lawren Markle and his family live in Altadena. He is an active hiker and horse rider. He joined the Board in 2006 and is the primary media relations contact for AFC. Lawren works for Tech Image as a media relations and analyst relations manager promoting a wide variety of high technology products and services.
Robert Staehle
Robert Staehle Chairs the Board’s Natural Resources Committee. Robert has held a variety of positions in planetary exploration projects and technology development. Currently, he is also the Meetings Chair of the Altadena Crest Trail Restoration Working Group (ACTRWG) Steering Committee. Rob is a trail runner, hiker and mountain biker.
Marc Stirdivant
A Southern California native, Marc Stirdivant is a founding director of Glendale-Crescenta V.O.I.C.E. (Volunteers Organized in Conserving the Environment), where he serves as Chairman of the Board. Marc represents the City of Glendale on the Advisory Committee of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, sits on the board of the Bolsa Chica Land Trust, and is a member of the Sierra Club. Marc is currently a Senior Administrative Analyst for the City of Glendale, where he works to fund urban park and open space acquisitions and enhancements.
Tim Wendler
Tim Wendler is a professional environmental engineer, specializing in the investigation and cleanup of contamination at proposed new school sites. Tim currently chairs both the Hahamongna Watershed Park Advisory Committee and the Pasadena Recreation and Parks Commission. He is also an Advisory Committee member for the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.

John Howell, Executive Director
A Pasadena area native, John R. Howell is an attorney specializing in real estate, business, and contract law, including land conservation. John has represented The Nature Conservancy and the Trust for Public Land in numerous transactions. He is a founding member of Open Space Now, an advocacy group for natural open space in Pasadena, a member of the Arlington Garden Advisory Committee, and has been a community activist for many years.
